THE SHIP
 |
This ship has
been our logo from
the beginning. It was drawn in the likeness of the USS Constellation, which is docked at
Harbor Place, Baltimore, Maryland. After its commissioning in 1855, the Constellation was
assigned to the Mediterranean Squadron and cruised the waters of southern Europe for three
years. On April 20, 1859, the Constellation was designated to be the flagship of the
Navy's African Squadron. This six- ship squadron was ordered to interdict the
"triangle trade" that was taking slaves from Africa to South America, the
Caribbean Islands and the southern United States. The Constellation took up station off
the mouth of the Congo River on November 21,1859. Her efforts resulted in the capture of
the brig Delicia on December 21, 1859, the barque Cora on September 26, 1860 and the brig
Triton on May 21, 1861. "...report the capture of a baroque {Cora} with no flag and a
cargo of 705 slaves..." Flag Officer Inman."... He sent us to pull up the
hatches and 705 natives came out of the hold, yelling and cringing. They ran forward and
crouched on the bow ...it was a fearful job, cleaning and doctoring those natives. They
were nearly starved, but they responded to treatment and after keeping them awhile we
landed them in Monrovia..." Landsmen French, Constellation crewmember 1859 -

Our
founder
I, Caldwell McMillan,(aka Shajid), entered the incense
business in 1969. Being raised on a Maryland tobacco farm, the fragrance seed was
implanted in my spirit from childhood. There was the scent of tobacco curing in the barns,
the earthiness of freshly plowed fields, cornfields after the rain, honeysuckles in the
Spring, the smell of sassafras roots and pine trees from newly cleared land , new mown hay
, tomatoes, flowers. peaches and so forth and so on. In 1969 I moved to Philadelphia,
where along with playing music I started making incense . By 1973, I returned to Maryland
and organized my ventures into the "Chesapeake Incense Company"..
